Local Host Guidelines

What do I need to do to become a local host?

  1. Decide what kind of event it should be.
  2. Decide when you would like to host it:
    1. Anytime Saturday May 8th between 15:00 and 20:00 CET is good.
  3. Decide whom to invite
  4. Decide the venue
    1. Indoors or outside?
    2. Online? We can help you.
  5. Fill in the form here: https://europeanbildung.net/ebd2021-local-hosts-sign-up-page/
  6. Get started on the practicalities.

Can my local event be about anything?

In order to appear in the official program, your local event must match the theme for European Bildung Day 2021: Bildung, Unlocking the Spirit; How do we do it? So it has to relate to bildung and best practices.

We have two very easy suggestions for you:

Or you can be creative and come up with your own idea.

Must it be Saturday May 8th between 15:00 and 20:00 CET?

Some European countries happen to have a holiday that day, some organizations have to host their local event during normal work hours, so…

We are flexible with regards to the time, as long as it is between May 1st and May 8th and does not interfere with the main events on Saturday May 8th.

Who may I invite?

You may invite whoever you want.

You can invite people from your local bildung community either professionally engaged in bildung (teachers, pedagogues, cultural institutions, libraries, academia, civil society etc.) or a broader community (business, activists, NGO’s, students etc.); you decide.

Or why not invite some good friends or colleagues for a picnic (or a cup of coffee) and just follow the Conversation Menu? (see below)

How big must the event be? How many people must participate? How many hours?

Depending on your mission, local community and resources, the event can be small, medium or large, and it can be 30 minutes or 3 hours, that’s up to you.

If people only participate in my local event, must they pay for participation in the official program as well?

No. 🙂

And you are free to charge your participants for participating in your event, but we cannot run the ticket sales for you. You will have to do that from your own website.

As a host, you will have to sign up for the main conference, and we expect that you join the Sunday May 9th morning session and share what came out of your event.

I do not have any experience with organizing an online event, what do I do?

There are two options with which we can help you:

  1. Hosting a Zoom event.
  2. Hosting a roundtable with maximum 8 people incl. yourself as the host. We can set that up for you online at no cost.

If you join one of the Monday 14:00-15:00 CET Help Desk Meetings, we will tell you how

Must I organize my local event in English?

No. We strongly encourage everybody to host their local event in their local language.

We are also looking forward to receiving your program text in your local language.

Can you cover my expenses for the local event?

No.

But as a local host we can let you participate in the rest of the EBD2021 for free.

And as stated above: You may sell your own tickets.

Is there a deadline for signing up as a local host?

Yes, and we just moved it to May 1st.

Is there a deadline for providing program info regarding my event?

Yes, and we also just moved that to May 1st.

Please go here and fill in this form with info about your event: https://europeanbildung.net/ebd2021-local-hosts-sign-up-page/

Then we will give you an event page like this: https://europeanbildung.net/events/fra-folkeopplysning-via-dannelse-til-bildung/

And one more thing:

We would like you to document your event with minimum one photo and a descriptive text of approx. 200 words that we can publish on the European Bildung Network website afterwards.

What would be the easiest way for me to host a local event?

  1. Send an email to network@europeanbildung.org and tell us that you would like to become a local host.
  2. Find an outdoor venue
    1. you can organize a walk-and-talk, or
    2. find a place where people can sit corona safely and make it a picnick, or
  3. Ask us for an online table for 8 people.
  4. Pick either the European Bildung Manifesto or the Bildung Conversation Menu as the theme for your event (see below).

What else do I need to know?

The event must be inclusive and constructive and based on conversation.

There will be a YouTube video available from Sunday March 21st with Lene Rachel Andersen explaining bildung as a concept, and you may use it as part of your invitation or you may show it as part of your event.

You can always write us at network@europeanbildung.net and ask any question you might have.

Two Easy Ways to Host a Local Event

Please feel free to do something else, we love variety.

The European Bildung Manifesto

We will be discussing the European Bildung Manifesto on May 9th as part of the morning session, and it would be really interesting to hear feedback from local discussions of the Manifesto as part of the Sunday May 9th event.

You find the current draft of the Manifesto here: https://europeanbildung.net/manifesto/ and we will make a pdf print friendly final version available no later than May 1st.

At your local event, you may read the Manifesto together and discuss it, or why not translate it into your own language and share it with us afterwards, so that we have it in as many languages as possible?

What is Bildung?

If your local guests are new to bildung and need an introduction, Lene Rachel Andersen has made this video that you can share with them:

The Bildung Conversation Menu

Organize your event as a series of parallel discussions in groups of 2-4 people.

There is a cell phone friendly version of the Conversation Menu here: https://europeanbildung.net/ebd2021/european-bildung-day-conversation-menu-2021/.

You can download the Conversation Menu as a pdf here: https://europeanbildung.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Conversation_Menu_2021.pdf

You can print it out our you can share it with your participants as a link; you may share the link as part of your invitation, or you may wait with it until the actual event.

If you would like the Conversation Menu in your own language, please let us know, translate the text, and we will find out the best way to help you with the graphics.

We are looking very much forward to seeing you for the third European Bildung day. This year we will focus on best practices for bildung and the event will be a combination of a Pan-European Zoom conference like last year and local events.
